Exceptionally fine and rare Sheraton inlaid mahogany
sideboard, of "D" shaped form with bowed intermediate
sections and a concave center, above concave tambour center and
ovolo ends with attached gallery. The magnificence of this work of art defies description.
The mystery of the scarcity of identifiable Charleston major works is deepened when
one realizes that if this chef doeuvre exists there must be others not yet
discovered. The inlaid center panels depict the cotton plant and buds. With all its mass,
the piece seems light and well integrated. Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1800-1810. 40 ½ high, 57 ¼", with
gallery, 89 ¾" wide, 30 7/8" deep. |
